From 11 to 13 October chemists from 35 countries discussed the challenges posed by the transformation of the energy system. Attendees of the forum "Fundamental Concepts and Principles of Chemical Energy Conversion", 172 scientists from 35 countries, have discussed which materials and technologies for energy conversion are expected to be implemented in the future. Experts have presented approaches being taken in the fields of nanotechnology and surface chemistry or used in the development of new storage materials, such as for rechargeable batteries. The Bonn Humboldt Award Winners' Forum focused also on research being conducted on superconductors as well as on light-harvesting properties of materials used for solar cells.
The Republic of Moldova was represented by Prof. Vasile Tronciu (TUM), Dr. Eduard Monaico (TUM), Prof. Anatolie Sidorenco (ASM) and Dr. Vadim Sirkeli (Comrat University).
The Humboldt Award Winners' Forum have been opened by the Rector of the University of Bonn, Michael Hoch; the Mayor of the City of Bonn, Angelica Maria Kappel; and the President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Helmut Schwarz, himself a chemist. The keynote lecture have been given by the distinguished chemist and Humboldt Research Award winner Cynthia M. Friend, professor at Harvard University, Cambridge, USA.
The scientific supervisors for the forum are Robert Schlögl, chemist und Director of the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin and Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion in Essen, and Nicola Hüsing, Professor for Materials Chemistry at Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, Austria.
The Bonn Humboldt Award Winners’ Forum is an annual event organised by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to connect their research award winners with early career researchers and German host institutions. The conference also aims to raise Bonn’s profile as a centre of science and scholarship.
